Two numbers get printed on garage doors and they are not comparable. R-value describes a section in isolation; U-factor describes the whole installed door, and only one of them predicts what a garage will feel like in August.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (214) 817-0539The trade association is precise about this. U-factor is thermal transmittance in British thermal units per hour per square foot per degree Fahrenheit, tested on the entire installed assembly under the ANSI/DASMA 105 method. R-value is thermal resistance, calculated on the section alone. The two are not reciprocals and are not interchangeable, because a whole-door figure includes the thermal shortcuts at stiles, joints and the perimeter that a section calculation ignores. Everything on the service index that touches a door's construction ends up bumping into that distinction.
Carrollton adopted the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code with the rest of the 2024 code family under ordinance 4265, effective September 1, 2025. Denton County, which covers the northern part of the city, is a climate zone 3A location in the code's own table, a moist warm-humid designation. The energy code governs the conditioned envelope, so an unconditioned garage is not where compliance is won or lost; a door between a garage and a living space is the assembly that carries a requirement.
An insulated section is heavier than a hollow one. Doors range from roughly ninety pounds to over five hundred, and the trade association warns plainly that doors are not designed to accommodate additional weight, that adding it can unbalance the door, break springs, overwork the operator and twist horizontal track. Retrofitting foam panels into an existing steel door is the version of this that goes wrong most often. If the counterbalance is not re-rated afterward, the new door weight is charged to hardware sized for the old one, and spring repair follows within months.
An insulated door with a big temperature difference across it bows, and the trade association notes that the effect grows with door width, to the point that a twenty-foot-wide door can bow several inches. It also notes that darker doors facing the sun bow more than white ones, and that thermally broken construction bows more, not less. In a city with fifty-five days at or above one hundred degrees at the airport in 2023, a dark bronze double door on a west elevation is the worst case. Horizontal struts are the accepted correction.
Decide what the room is for. A workshop or a gym behind the door justifies a two-inch polyurethane section with a good U-factor and a struts-and-seals package. Storage behind a door that faces north justifies far less. Air sealing usually returns more comfort per dollar than another inch of foam, which is why the weather seal page belongs in the same conversation as the insulation catalog.

Why it matters: A spring repair or like-for-like door swap is different from widening, moving or reframing a garage opening, which should be confirmed with the City before work begins.

Carrollton reports that the May 28, 2024 storm brought straight-line winds of 80 to 95 mph and affected all 37.1 square miles of the city.
Why it matters: After a major storm, a garage-door inspection should look past cosmetic dents to tracks, hinges, struts and rollers that may have been pushed out of alignment.

The National Weather Service count for DFW Airport lists 55 days at or above 100 degrees in 2023, 21 of them consecutive.
Why it matters: Heat that sustained ages opener boards, plastic sensor brackets and vinyl seals faster than the door hardware itself.
