R-value and U-factor measure different objects

The trade association is precise about this. U-factor is thermal transmittance in British thermal units per hour per square foot per degree Fahrenheit, tested on the entire installed assembly under the ANSI/DASMA 105 method. R-value is thermal resistance, calculated on the section alone. The two are not reciprocals and are not interchangeable, because a whole-door figure includes the thermal shortcuts at stiles, joints and the perimeter that a section calculation ignores. Everything on the service index that touches a door's construction ends up bumping into that distinction.

What the local code actually regulates

Thermal bow is the summer side effect nobody mentions

An insulated door with a big temperature difference across it bows, and the trade association notes that the effect grows with door width, to the point that a twenty-foot-wide door can bow several inches. It also notes that darker doors facing the sun bow more than white ones, and that thermally broken construction bows more, not less. In a city with fifty-five days at or above one hundred degrees at the airport in 2023, a dark bronze double door on a west elevation is the worst case. Horizontal struts are the accepted correction.

Choosing sensibly for a garage on these streets

Decide what the room is for. A workshop or a gym behind the door justifies a two-inch polyurethane section with a good U-factor and a struts-and-seals package. Storage behind a door that faces north justifies far less.
