Why the older layout is still out there

Headroom, header and the practical limits

A torsion shaft needs clear space above the opening for the shaft, drums, cable and bearing plates, and the center pad must be structurally sound load-bearing material because it carries the full wound load. Low-headroom hardware exists and costs more. Garages from the 1970s often have a shallow header and ductwork close behind it, so the site measurement is what decides whether a standard shaft, a low-clearance kit or a rear-mount arrangement is possible.

What changes after the conversion

Balance becomes adjustable in turns rather than in hooked positions, so the door can be tuned to hold at waist height instead of drifting. Failures become contained, and a broken coil stays on the shaft. Cycle life is generally longer for the same money, and the operator sees a steadier load. Two coils on a double door share the work, so a single break leaves partial support rather than none.
