Two unrelated complaints arrive under one label. A door that retreats partway down is usually obeying a federal rule to the letter, while a motor running against a motionless door is often a ten-second reconnection.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (214) 817-0539Part 1211 of title 16 of the federal regulations covers residential operators built for sale in this country on or after January 1, 1993. Section 1211.6(a) requires primary inherent entrapment protection in the head itself. Section 1211.7(a)(1) then spells out the behavior: past the first foot of travel down from the full upmost position, a closing door has to begin reversing within two seconds of contact with an obstruction, then return to that upmost position and stop there. So a door that retreats and parks itself wide open has not failed in the ordinary sense. It is filing a report, and the work is finding out what it thinks it touched.
Federal rules also address a door that never arrives where the head expects it. Under 1211.7(g)(1), a system that is not tracking actual door position must reverse if the lower limit device has not been reached within 30 seconds of starting to close. Where the system does watch position, 1211.7(f)(1) requires it to check at increments no coarser than an inch. Both provisions mean the same thing for a homeowner. Drag anywhere in the travel eventually looks like an obstruction, so an aging door with dry rollers or a tired spring produces a symptom that appears electronic. Winding the closing force upward deletes the report instead of the resistance. Run the monthly check the required instructions describe: the door must reverse when it meets a one and a half inch object, or a two-by-four laid flat, on the floor.
Have someone press the button while you watch the rail from the side. Chain or belt moving with the door still down means the trolley is no longer coupled to the carriage. That happens after the release cord gets pulled during a power cut, which this city knows well. NOAA's record of the May 28, 2024 bow echo notes intense winds bringing trees down across Carrollton roadways, and the survey put straight-line winds at 80 to 95 mph. A grind with the chain refusing to move usually means the nylon drive gear in an older chain head has rounded off its teeth, and that is a part rather than a purchase. A short hum that quits points instead at a capacitor, a board, or a leaf that has grown too heavy for the unit.
Hanging a new head on an existing receptacle is service work on equipment you already own. Running a fresh circuit for one is electrical work, and the city prices that in its single-trade category at $4 per $1,000 of value with a $75 floor, with a reinspection at $50. The city's remodeling guidance is direct about who does it. A homeowner may perform work on their own homestead, and anyone else doing electrical work has to hold the state license and be registered as a contractor with the city. That registration is free, renews once a year, and no permit is issued until every contractor on the job is current. An expired registration also stops further inspections from being requested, even where the work is finished.
A head old enough to have no external sensors at all should be replaced rather than nursed. Federal rules allow three secondary arrangements under 1211.6(b): a control requiring constant pressure to lower the door, a means of connecting an external device such as photo eyes, or an inherent secondary device in the operator. A cracked housing or a board nobody stocks ends the conversation the same way. Short of that, most units above these openings are worth a part, and the answer you should get is a named fault, the price of that part, and a candid read on whether it makes sense given the age of the unit.

Why it matters: A spring repair or like-for-like door swap is different from widening, moving or reframing a garage opening, which should be confirmed with the City before work begins.

Carrollton reports that the May 28, 2024 storm brought straight-line winds of 80 to 95 mph and affected all 37.1 square miles of the city.
Why it matters: After a major storm, a garage-door inspection should look past cosmetic dents to tracks, hinges, struts and rollers that may have been pushed out of alignment.

The National Weather Service count for DFW Airport lists 55 days at or above 100 degrees in 2023, 21 of them consecutive.
Why it matters: Heat that sustained ages opener boards, plastic sensor brackets and vinyl seals faster than the door hardware itself.
